Hand Crafted American Windsor Chairs by Brian R. Cunfer

y passion for Windsor chairs began in 1993 while making my first chair, an Appalachian Rocking Chair. At the end of our week-long class, the instructor brought in a Loop Back Windsor Chair. He said if anyone was interested, he was teaching a beginning Windsor chair class later that year. I immediately signed up! And thus my journey with Windsor chairs began. I had no idea of the vast variety of American Windsor Chair styles or construction techniques, so during the next few years I continued taking classes, purchased Windsor chair books, and visited numerous flea markets, auctions and antique shops collecting antique woodworking tools. I enjoy using these antique hand tools to shape and assemble chair parts. Using antique tools takes you back to the early 18th century when craftsmen were creating the first American Windsor Chair. It's then you begin to understand the craftsmen, his tools, and the quality workmanship produced. Once assembly is complete, the chair is finished in a multi-step process consisting of milk paint and satin varnish then rubbed with finishing wax.

I am the sole proprietor of this chair business and I personally build each chair by hand from beginning to end.
